26th Curtas Vila do Conde: Full Programme

The organization of Curtas Vila do Conde - International Film Festival this morning announced the complete program for the 26th edition, to be held between July 14 and 22, 2018. The awaited selection of the National Competition includes the latest films by renowned filmmakers Ivo M. Ferreira, João Viana or Rodrigo Areias, but also newcomers like David Pinheiro Vicente or Ana Moreira. In total, the festival features 90 movie sessions and more than 200 films from more than 40 countries.

The National Competition is once again the center of Curtas Vila do Conde, bringing the best of Portuguese cinema produced in 2017 and 2018 in the short film, with films signed by internationally recognized filmmakers and young promises that have been made. in the field of filmmaking. The official selection includes, in total, 17 films: "3 Years Later", by Marco Amaral; "À Tona" by Filipe Abranches; "Agouro", by David Doutel and Vasco Sá; "Água Forte", by Mónica Baptista; "Anteu", by João Vladimiro; "Aquaparque", by Ana Moreira; "Declive", by Eduardo Brito; "Entre Sombras" by Alice Eça Guimarães and Mónica Santos; "Equinox", by Ivo M. Ferreira; "Madness", by João Viana; "Fog" by Daniel Veloso; "Where the Summer Goes (Chapters on Youth)", by David Pinheiro Vicente, "Pas de Confettis" by Bruno Ferreira, "Cold Pixel" by Rodrigo Areias, "Placenta" by Paulo Lima, "Sara F." of Miguel Fonseca and "Sheila", of Gonçalo Loureiro.


The International Competition is the window of the Curtas Vila do Conde to the world, in a heterogeneous selection at all levels: formal, thematic and of cinematographic genre. Thirty-one short films, including the latest works by award-winning filmmakers both at the festival and internationally, such as Ben Rivers and Ben Russell, Bertrand Mandico, Helena Girón and Samuel M. Delgado and João Paulo Miranda Maria. In a more daring and attentive program, the Experimental Competition brings together 17 films featuring Matthias Müller, Morgan Fisher, Manuel Knapp and Makino Takashi. The Music Video Competition, part of the Stereo section dedicated to celebrating the relationship between music and film, presents a session of the best of its kind on a national level. Finally, the Take One! Competition, this year extended to six other European countries, besides Portugal, is dedicated to the discovery of what is best done in film schools. 


Mini-festival within the festival, Curtinhas also presents a competitive section, divided into three age groups (M/3, M/ 6 and M/10), as well as various workshops and other didactic activities dedicated to children. The film "The Incredibles 2: The Superheroes" opens the section on the first day of the festival, on July 14, in a session for the whole family. 


Parallel to the festival, the Solar Gallery of Cinematic Art presents the exhibition New Spain, curated by José Manuel López, Spanish curator, and Nuno Rodrigues, co-director of the festival and coordinator of the gallery, which opens on the first day of the festival. Seven Spanish artists / filmmakers - Carla Andrade, Inés García, Laida Lertxundi, Lois Patiño, Natalia Marín and Helena Girón and Samuel M. Delgado - will present site-specific installations, combining various media such as film, video, photography and sound , and defying the boundaries between cinema and the visual arts. The exhibition also includes three film sessions, included in the festival, one curated by Maria Palácios Cruz and two others programmed by Gonzalo de Pedro Amatria (Locarno Festival). 


The festival also features a special session entitled Produções Curtas that includes the films "Rio Entre As Montanhas" by José Magro, produced under the 72 Hour Film Project, Hancheng Jinzhen festival; "Circo do Amor" by Miguel Clara Vasconcelos, a film produced with the support of ICA - Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual for fiction short films, and "Náufragos" by Pedro Neves, produced in the framework of the Animar 13 workshops, and the last two were shot at Vila do Conde. 


"Diamantino" by Daniel Schmidt and Gabriel Abrantes, recently awarded in Cannes, marks the start of Curtas and the section From Shorts to Features, which also includes the films "Le Monde est à toi" by Romain Gavras, "The Green Fog" by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, and" Un couteau dans le coeur "by Yann Gonzalez. Invited by Curtas, the French director will also present a carte blanche titled Midnight Madness Avant-Garde that promises to be the most exciting and frightening session of this festival, with a set of cutting-edge cinema works, mostly in 16mm film. 


In 2018, Curtas Vila do Conde - International Film Festival received more than 3000 entries, including about 2,300 for the International Competition and more than a hundred for the National Competition. A very careful selection work led to the sets of films that give shape to the different sections of the competition, showing the best that took place in the short film between 2017 and 2018, all over the world.


The 26th Curtas Vila do Conde, which runs between July 14 and 22, has the support of the MEDIA / Creative Europe program, Vila do Conde City Hall, the Ministry of Culture, the Cinema and Audiovisual Institute and several indispensable partners to the festival.
