Curtas starts this Saturday with Bacurau

The 27th edition of Curtas Vila do Conde starts this Saturday, July 6th. The festival will take to Vila do Conde more than 250 films in a show of the most creative and innovative is happening at the moment with the cinematographic language, in permanent dialogue with other forms of artistic and cultural expression.

To mark the start, the preview of Bacurau, Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, a dystopian tropical western that won the jury award at this year's Cannes festival. With performances by Sónia Braga and Barbara Colen, among others, Bacurau is an impressive allegory of the current Brazilian political situation.

 
 In focus in this Curtas will also be the works of the North American Todd Solondz, the greatest figure in independent cinema and a sharp critic of contemporary American society; and of the Portuguese-Angolan Carlos Conceição. It will also be possible to watch, in the From Short film to Long section, the premiere of the first two episodes of Luz Vermelha, a series by André Santos and Marco Leão and Knives and Skin, by Jennifer Reader. 
This year, particular attention to discovering and revisiting forgotten, ignored or undervalued works, in an operation to rescue memory and cinephilia that is the most recent section of the festival: Revisited Cinema. The first programme presents works on José Régio and works by Sergei Parajanov, António Reis, the duo Joe Dante and Jon Davidson, Disney productions in Technicolor or the beginning of John Rambo's saga.

 
In the Stereo section, special attention is given to the return of Thurston Moore, one of the founding members of Sonic Youth, to Portugal, to play a selection of Maya Deren's films live. Tiago Cutileiro and Marta Navarro will accompany with an original score the classic O Gabinete do Dr. Caligari, os Montanhas Azuis (Marco Franco, Norberto Lobo and Bruno Pernadas) play before the choices and images of the visual artist Pedro Maia, while the London collective The Heliocentrics will accompany the film Heaven and Earth Magic by Harry Smith, one of the most significant filmmakers of vanguard and animation. On the musical level, he also notes the debut of the documentary Mutantes S.21 - 25 years later, about the celebration of the anniversary of the Mão Morta album, and for the performance BrainBows, a sensorial experience by experimental filmmaker Rainer Kohlberger. 

 
In the parallel activities, Solar - Galeria de Arte Cinemática proposes a revisitation to one of the most iconic works in the history of cinema, The Office of Dr. Caligari, with original works by Daniel Blaufuks, Eduardo Brito, Rainer Kohlberger and Jonathan Uliel Saldanha.

 
The 27th edition of Curtas also includes a Portuguese and international competition with the best that has been done during the last year in the seventh art, an experimental competition that looks at the most irreverent and challenging side of cinema, a competition of musical videos and a competition of films made in a school context. For young people and families, Curtinhas continues to invest in training and entertainment for children up to the age of 9, with a vast programme of sessions and workshops which, this year, includes for the first time a selection of films made by students from schools in the region.
Between 6 and 14 July, Curtas will return to the Municipal Theatre of Vila do Conde, the Municipal Auditorium and the Solar Gallery. The complete programme can be found in short films.
