UM CONTO DE DUAS CIDADES A TALE OF TWO CITIES
Morag Brennan, Steve Harrison, 2017
Portugal· United Kingdom, DOC, 01:25:00,
A film about Póvoa de Varzim in the 1950s and 1960s, starred by the people of Póvoa de Varzim. The film begins with the famous photograph of Maria do Alívio at age 16, walking barefoot through Rua das Lavadeiras, under the iconic publicity poster with the diva Sophia Loren, and tells the story of two very different Póvoas de Varzim: the fishing community and the brutal reality of a traditional way of life, and the tourist town and the individuals who have begun to design it nationally as a busy holiday destination. The film offers this historical journey to a world that is now almost forgotten, but also to a Portuguese society marked by the Salazarismo of bad memory. For the dictator, Póvoa de Varzim represented a singular repository of memories linked to the heroic sea gestation, but it would also be the dramatic scenario for the confrontation between the Estado Novo dictatorship and the man who swore to overthrow it, General Humberto Delgado. This "Tale of Two Cities" is told through eyewitness interviews, sometimes hilarious and sometimes painful, but always inspiring and revealing.
