CELE DOUA EXECUTII ALE MARESALULUI THE MARSHAL’S TWO EXECUTIONS
Radu Jude, 2018
Romania, FIC, 00:10:00
This essay warns of the danger of story manipulation through images. Radu Jude explores the confrontation between the images and the words of two versions of the execution of General Ion Antonescu, leader of Romania during the period of World War II. From a documentary of 1946 and a fictionalized biography of 1994, Jude underlines the complexity of the issue, effectively using the comparison between the two films to disassemble the later version and fictionalized with the images recorded in 1946, thus revealing the intentions of fiction in creating a different narrative. The hard and realistic images of the documentary are presented in a solemn silence; on the other hand, fiction uses various artifices to embellish reality, such as dramatic music, slow motion, bloodlessness or the general voice-over after his execution. It remains to know which is the most influential version on the public domain and whether this work can equilibrate the balance of memory. This is the third film that is screened at Vila do Conde by the Romanian director, already awarded in festivals as Cannes and Berlin. (JA)
