CÉZANNECÉZANNELuke Fowler, 2019 United Kingdom · France,
EXP, 00:06:36This is a portrait-account of a trip to the south of France, resembling an impressionist journal, in tribute of French master Paul Cézanne. In the film, a series of quite brief 16mm footage, almost like lightning-fast photographs with minimal and quick movements, are projected at a breakneck pace that is not enough for us to completely realize what is being portrayed, but enough to last over the following images and, above all, to create a lasting scenic impression. This image composition, like a free-style collage, is scored by an ambient soundtrack created by Toshiya Tsunoda, which elevates the treatment of light and nature as primary creative elements, making it look as if Luke Fowler, debuting at Curtas, were painting with the camera. The result is an intoxicating and luminous approach to the post-impressionist style made famous by Cézanne, in a gale of colors and light. (JA)
