LOOK THEN BELOWLOOK THEN BELOWBen Rivers, 2019 United Kingdom,
EXP, 00:22:30Following “Slow Action” and “Urth”, “Look Then Below” completes Ben Rivers’ trilogy of films co-written with US author Mark von Schlegell, a series predicated on the combination of texts and images, narratives and myths, scientific theory and contemporary debates. In “Look Then Below”, we come across a cave in Somerset, in southwest England. The cave, though, may as well be an island, memorized amidst colors, mists, oceans and lights. Inside, the images are inhabited by lost civilizations, representing something we can no longer discern: whether a ruin, or a utopia. A regular presence at Curtas Vila do Conde, from the award-winning “Ah Liberty!” in 2008 to the exhibit "Ruins/Rites/Runes", coauthored with Ben Russell at Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery in 2015, Ben Rivers returns to Somerset in order to figure out ways, through filmic landscapes and the region’s territory, we can imagine our planet’s future.
