The Iranian Abbas Kiarostami is one of the most renowned filmmakers in contemporary cinema. This recognition led him , in recent years , to work on projects with the French actress Juliette Binoche, like " Shirin " (2008 ) or " Certified Copy " (2010 ) . However , his work spans several major films like " Through the Olive Trees " (1994 ) , " Taste of Cherry " (1997 ) or "Ten " (2002 ) . With "Taste of Cherry " , Kiarostami was recognized with the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, making it an essential reference to the world cinema . But "Ten", for example, shows how his work is relentlessly seeking for new methods , experimenting with new media and the lack of structured arguments.

However, the director already has a career since the early 70s , as part of the new wave of Iranian cinema with other filmmakers like Mohsen Makhmalbaf , Bahram Beizai or Parviz Kimiavi . In those years, this group of filmmakers was recognized by a poetic and allegorical work, dealing with philosophical but also political issues. Part of this movement is done in the context of the film section of the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Adolescents, which Kiarostami founded.

In 1995, during the 3rd Festival , Curtas Vila do Conde displayed a retrospective of films chosen by the director : a collection of short films produced in the context of the Institute cited and which are held by several of the new wave filmmakers , as well as himself. These short films from the 70’s are of its own time and its educational function, but rehearse the themes and techniques of the future career of the filmmaker. As is the case with "The Bread and Alley" conducted by Kiarostami himself (pictured).

As Abbas Kiarostami wrote in the festival catalog, "In short films we see individual filmmakers and artistic values rather than their technical prowess. That's why many short films are better than the feature films of the same filmmakers."
