The 28th edition of Curtas de Vila do Conde starts this Saturday, October 3rd. A festival with a special format, committed to the new times, but where the actuality and urgency of the program are again the main focus of the event that wants to be the stage for the dissemination of what is best done, experienced or reinvented in short format cinema. With simultaneous extensions to Porto, Lisbon and Faro and a program with more than 200 films and exclusive content available online, Curtas de Vila do Conde reaffirms the importance of meeting, cinema, theater, in a time where social interactions are compromised. A well justified concern in a selection that puts, side by side, consecrated directors and new voices and that rehearses a transversal look for what is done in film schools, in the international panorama and inside the doors of the country. Identities, history, feelings of belonging, individual freedoms and acquired rights are some of the strong dishes of the more than 261 films that will mark the different sections of the festival.

Marking the beginning of Curtas the national premiere of Casa de Antiguidades, first feature film by João Paulo Miranda Maria. A story about prejudice and racism in the South of Brazil, interpreted by the historical António Pitanga. In focus will also be the work of Spanish artist Isaki Lacuesta, multi-verse with a body of work that crosses several artistic languages. Along with the selection of films, the festival proposes an exhibition of the author at Solar - Galeria de Arte Cinemática. With opening on October 3, at 16h00, the set of pieces in exhibition highlights the diversity of the work of the Catalan artist and filmmaker, including some unpublished. Special word also for the New Voices section, created this year and dedicated to the young directors Elena Lopez Riera, Ana ElenaTejera and Ana Maria Gomes.
Section opened in 2019, Cinema Revisitado bets on special programs that visit the history of cinema. A look at the work of Jean-Luc Godard as head of Fox's press office and a special session on One Week, by Buster Keaton, are some of the bets for 2020. Note of attention also for the program The Greats Don't Leave the Short, with works by João Pedro Rodrigues, Yorgos Lanthimos, Jonathan Glazer and José Luis Guerin. In the Short Feature Film section, it will also be possible to watch one of the most talked about films of the year First Cow, by Kelly Reichardt, and the previews of Heirs of Saramago: ep. Valter Hugo Mãe e Vencidos da Vida, the next film by Rodrigo Areias. The Stereo section is marked by the premiere in the continent of Guanche, a cine-concert by The Legendary Tigerman, Pedro Maia and Íris Cayatte.
The 28th edition of Curtas also integrates a national and international competition with the best that has been done during the last year, an experimental competition that looks at the most irreverent and challenging side of cinema, a music video competition and a competition composed of films made in a training context. For the youngest and families, Curtinhas continues to bet on training and fun for children and young people, with a vast program of sessions, which includes a selection of films made by students from schools in the region.
