Exhibition and Book - 20 Years Curtas Vila do Conde

To celebrate the 20 th Curtas Vila do Conde - and beyond the comission of four short films - the first day of the festival presents three special events. At Teatro Municipal, it will open a photography exhibition (at 17h30) that explores the vast photographic archive of the last twenty years, showing many of the authors who were in Vila do Conde. It will also be presented a book ("Pure Cinema") published for the anniversary and that includes twenty interviews with authors of the festival, as well as written reflections about our history. Finally, it will be screened the documentary "Generations Shorts!" directed by José Vieira Mendes  (18:30, Room Two).

The book "Pure Cinema" is a reflection on cinema, from twenty interviews with twenty-six authors who have gone through Vila do Conde. It is Intended to be, therefore, a document that discusses the changes and trends in contemporary cinema in its various mutations, calling into question the very definition of what cinema is. The result of this analysis also helps clarify the identity of Curtas Vila do Conde in the last two decades while film festival contaminated by other art forms. As a complement, there are personal reflections on the festival, from the film critic Augusto M. Seabra and the American filmmaker Mike Hoolboom; finally, there is a critical history of the festival.

Curtas Vila do Conde at (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico

Curtas Vila do Conde is one of the special guests of (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico, which takes place between May 31 and June 3, in La Coruna, Spain. This festival shows every year, a group of films that challenge the dominant conventions, proposing new paradigms for the cinema of the future.

In this edition, Curtas Vila do Conde is honored for its 20 years through the screening of four short films that were a direct result of commissions from the festival: "Untitled", by João Onofre, "Strokkur," João Salaviza; "Beacon "by Christoph Girardet and Matthias Müller, and" Remains", by Sandro Aguilar.

On June 1, Nuno Rodrigues (Curtas Vila do Conde director) will also attend a roundtable, part of the initiative "From white cube to black box", which aims to consider the passage of the cinema from the theatre to the museum .

On Wednesday, 2nd of May, Curtas Vila do Conde moves to Lisbon, for the Presentation Party of our next edition, at Musicbox. 


This party, which takes place during IndieLisboa, will have music and animation with the DJs Nuno Lopes, Sérgio Gomes and Miguel Dias.

Portuguese cinema in Brive

Curtas Vila do Conde has worked with Portuguese Short-Film Agency and the the Rencontres du moyen métrage de Brive, France, as curators of a Portuguese retrospective programme entitled “Jeune Cinema Portugais” to be screened in the next edition of the Festival, which takes place from 10 to 15 April. This Festival is the only one in Europe dedicated to medium lenght film.

The Portuguese programme is composed by several films, most of them screened and awarded at Curtas Vila do Conde: CANÇÃO DE AMOR E SAÚDE, by João Nicolau; UM DIA FRIO, by Cláudia Varejão; A CASA ESQUECIDA, by Teresa Garcia; ANGST, by Graça Canstanheira; ACORDAR, by Tiago Guedes & Frederico Serra; 31 by Miguel Gomes; ENTRETANTO by Miguel Gomes; RESPIRAR DEBAIXO D'ÁGUA by António Ferreira; and NUVEM, by Basil da Cunha; and VOODOO, by Sandro Aguilar.

Cinemascope Top 50

The magazine Cinemascope ( has reached its number 50. For this edition, this prestigious film magazine chose the top fifty filmmakers under fifty that represent the future of cinema. Among these names, there are several that were revealed in Portugal by Curtas Vila do Conde. Moreover, the cover of this edition is starred by "Tabu", the feature film by Miguel Gomes, recently awarded at the Berlin Film Festival.

Gomes is one of the Portuguese directors represented in this list. The other is João Pedro Rodrigues. Both filmmakers are constant presences in the festival since their first-works: Miguel Gomes, with "Entretanto", João Pedro Rodrigues, com "Parabéns!". The two have been identified as two revelations of the new world cinema with films that have found a wide international repercussion.

But the list is also a collection of the most important filmmakers of the new global landscape, some of which were screened in Portugal by Curtas Vila do Conde (many for the first time), including: Sergei Dvortsevoy, Nicolás Pereda, Ben Rivers, Lisandro Alonso, Serge Bozon, Jennifer Reeves and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Several of these filmmakers, won awards or were present in Vila do Conde.

Finally, the list also included other filmmakers that were screened at the Festival such as Michel Gondry, Johan Grimonprez, Ben Russell, Harmony Korine, Corneliu Porumboiu or Quentin Tarantino.
