SUNRISE SUNRISE
Lúcia Prancha, 2021

Lúcia Prancha returns to Curtas with the world premiere of “Sunrise”, a work that seeks to highlight an experience of the landscape, not in its idyllic sense, but based on its dialectical relationship with the technological evolution of human activity. From the long and violent process of colonization of the North American territories to the full affirmation of the United States of America, industrialization has always played a decisive role, and the train was the main symbol of its speed. The constitution and affirmation of the sovereignty of this country cost the lives of countless indigenous populations, and centuries later, the same class relations and power dynamics, benefiting the white supremacy, are evident in the degrading conditions of those who work from dawn to dusk in favor of the country's industrial evolution. It is no coincidence that Lúcia Prancha summons in “Sunrise” the poems “Dope”, by Amiri Baraka, and “Still I Rise”, by Maya Angelou, narrated by themselves during a long shot against the sunrise in the background of the Mojave Desert mountains. Excerpts from Charles Burnett's filmography are also included. As an act of political resistance, Prancha seeks to show that behind the modernization and technological evolution of the country there was another story, full of violence and social contradictions.
