Two parallel movements punctuate the new film by duo Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca: a visit paid to two house museums, palaces of yore that serve now as monuments to an ostentation of the past and as symbols of preserving the “status quo”. The two visits start in a conventional manner, but little by little the visitors reveal themselves to be players of different musical instruments, whose sound symbolically invades and takes over these spaces, places that were previously closed to them – and very likely to their ancestors as well –, enclosed in their wealth and conquests, still visible in the artifacts on display. This is a confrontation between a past made of colonial “conquests” and a present that puts it in question through the presence of these musicians who, even if only for a moment, reclaim the space for themselves and for the legacy they embody. It might be a fantasy, but it is an essential step in the discussion about memory reclamation and reassessment of history. This is the filmmaker duo’s fourth time at Curtas, after “You Are Seeing Things”, “Holy Tremors”, and “R.I.S.E.”. (JA)
