In celebration of Federico Fellini’s centennial, Guy Maddin and the brothers Galen and Evan Johnson come up with this poetic essay that, in a way, unites the universes of Maddin and Fellini based on what they might have in common: a vision of cinema as an art that summons fantasy, dreams, memories, and ghosts. And this is a spectral Fellini – or rather, an amalgamation of Fellini and Giulietta Masina – played by Isabella Rossellini who, before wandering through projections of his own dreams, sets the tone with the opening voice-over: “Last night I dreamed I was still alive”. Another successful chapter of Maddin’s stylistic obsessions – such as the manipulation of silent film’s expressionist or surrealist images, transfigured by a deforming lens that gives us back the unfulfilled promises of the early cinema’s avant-garde -, but also an opportunity to evoke the legacy of other filmmakers, always present in a more or less obvious way. Guy Maddin, working since the late 80s, has directed 12 features, which he juggles with multidisciplinary projects and short films. Since 2011, he has been collaborating with the Johnsons at the Development Ltd. collective. Guy Maddin has been to Curtas many times, the last one with “Stump the Guesser” (in 2020), also codirected with the Johnson brothers, just as “The Green Fog”, a feature screened out of competition in 2018.
