LOS LADRILLOS THE BRICKS
Tito Montero, 2020
Spain, DOC, 00:19:29
The event that leads us through the narrative of “Los Ladrillos” took place on May 1st, 1886, when the labor strikes paralyzed Chicago and other cities, in the struggle for the 8-hour workday and the right to unionize. Director Tito Montero, who has also dabbled in literature, chooses Uruguayan author Eduardo Galeano as one of his guides in an exploration of the United States of America’s sociopolitical landscape, where the latent power of the work by people connected by languages of Latin origin can be seen and heard. Montero’s trip to Chicago is the excuse to study the historical conditions and implications of the workers’ struggles, which persist over time and are reflected in his own life. Through the analysis of photos and stories he inherited from his family, which he connects and confronts with film footage we recognize from both the fictional and documentary universe, but also from the internet, defined by the filmmaker as a “global film archive”, Tito Montero presents a film essay at once personal and universal on post-memory.
