Jay wakes up in Manila, but he dreams of Athens. He has a nightmare, during which he’s got a special mission: saving his two daughters from a dangerous surgery. In his attempt to rescue them, he wanders around the city of Athens, seeing things in a very different light. A dream is always an ultra-subjective experience, and that is how Jacqueline Lentzou presents this sensorial symphony, with a camera that sometimes quietly wanders so close to the objects that it takes them a few seconds to gain focus and become identifiable and, moments later, becomes restless and unsteady, following our narrator’s state of anxiety while describing his dream. A sort of enchantment in the form of a visual poem, “Hiwa” is contagious in its state of abstraction and an elegy to the subconscious and its many paths. (JA)
