Which film will still be a topic of conversation in a café with friends years later? From where will emerge the director we will recall when they are receiving the most prestigious awards? Which unknown film will become part of a collective experience and memory? Will it be the Belgian animation about a group of siblings looking for a hair implant? A fiction from Andorra about a lost horror film? A documentary about the violence in Ireland in the 1980s that uses actors to recreate stories censored on television? Or a documentary about a filmmaker who sets out to discover what it means to be a truck driver and ends up becoming one?

Among the different genres – fiction, documentary, and animation – there are many candidates, because, besides serving as a window to contemporary cinema trends, this competition always presents new talents to discover, such as Nebojša Slijepčević (Cannes winner with “The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent”), Frank Sweeney (awarded in Rotterdam with “Few Can See”), Ilir Hasanaj (awarded in Rotterdam with “Workers’ Wings”), and Eric K. Boulianne (awarded in Locarno for “Making Babies”). One of the hallmarks of this section is also the way it allows us to follow the new works of directors already known to the Curtas audience. This edition sees the return of Torill Kove (third time at Curtas, with “Maybe Elephants”), Samir Karahoda (with “On the Way”), Florence Miailhe (with “Papillon”), Nina Gantz (“Wander to Wonder”), Nicolas Keppens (third appearance, with “Beautiful Men”), Corina Schwingruber Ilić (fourth appearance, with “Been There”), and Elena López Riera (winner of the Grand Prize at Curtas in 2019, and highlighted in the New Voices program in 2020).
