A film about America from Munich and about Munich via America. A film about the far-off country, its music and its films, its countryside and the experience of that country. In other words, a film about the dreams and desires of the two cinema-goers and filmmakers. Films should really be made up of total shots only, according to Wender's commentary. That has already been achieved in music, at least in American music. The film aims to visualize this commentary, especially through its music; three american songs from three american LPs by Van Morrison, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Harvey Mandel. The music is accompanied by shots of the city, long views of a building site, a car driving down a road near Munich. Fields and factories, a gravel quarry and a scrapyard. At the end, an empty drive-in cinema, its screen rising high into the sky like the images, the scenery of experience and dreams.
