The "old man" is a resident in an old people's hospice in a small village. He only has one pleasure left in life: drawing lots to decide which of the four sandwiches that make up his meal he will eat first. That is until the day when two boys from the village turn up at the hospice, looking for someone who could be relied upon to act as an official on the route of the cycle race that will be passing through the village next day.
