Bread Day takes us to a near-abandoned worker's settlement 80 kilometres from St. Petersburg, where only a handful of elderly people remains. Food is delivered to the village only once a week, when a railway car is disconnected from a passing rail line and the villagers must push the boxcar by hand into town. When the bread arrives at the local store, the elderly inhabitants can barely contain their hunger and anxiety, and the store clerk must exert all her powers of patient and control.
