A sequence of fixed takes shows the heads of criminals. They stare open-mouthed into the camera, against a clinically white background and resting on red cushions. We are in Cesare Lombroso's chamber of horrors in the Criminology Museum he founded in Turin about one hundred years ago. There the directors filmed his collection of murder weapons, photographs and parts of the body and heads preserved in formalin. The criminologists classified them according to his theory. Lombroso maintained that criminals were born to commit crimes and that this could be read in their facial features. He also believed that the sense of smell is less well developed in criminals. Cesare Lambroso/ Sull' Odore del Garofano - one of the two directors 'scented films' - evades the criminologist's theories by abolishing his classifications.
