In this film, the Monkees are the main characters in a series of episodes that make little sense, as far as logic is concerned. They have more to do with the psychedelic inspiration of the time than with being artistic. According to some critics, the script was written by Bob Rafelson and Jack Nicholson. The birth of the band is quite interesting since they were brought together on purpose to be featured as the starts of a NBC TV series, that reached considerable success between 1966 and 1968 in the U.S.A..The basic idea was undoubtedly to imitate and compete with the success of the British band the Beatles, being introduced as the American Beatles.Besides the sitcom, the band managed to get a life of its own, play live and do some movies as this film demonstrates, even if some of the members were not very good singers and couldn't play their instruments. That hard reality had to be changed in order for them to appear live and act in this film, which works like a dated psychedelic trip, not one bit less interesting, curious and now completely revitalised by the DJ Food's new approach.
