In 1982 Sogo Ishii directed Burst City, an aggressive and violent film with hand-held camera work and frenetic editing which revolutionized independent Japanese film making influencing, namely, the work of Shinya Tsukamoto (Tetsuo). However, the Japanese distributor showed an unfinished cut which didn't please neither the director ("the release date had been set previously, I couldn't finish the editing in order to fulfil the distribution agreement") nor the producers ("even today they feel uncomfortable with the idea of showing the film"), so Sogo Ishii decided to show the film with variable length and live music. Meanwhile, he decided to do the same with other films where "the editing changes according to [his] mood. I did the same with other film, at a time when I couldn't direct and I decided to suggest a fusion between film and music. Usually, these versions are presented in concert halls, where we improvise with my band Mach 1.67." In Vila do Conde, Sogo Ishii will be joined by one of the members of his band: Hiroyuki Onogawa. The film is an absolute premiere of a new montage of several of Sogo's films which have been prepared specially for the Festival.
