Borgate shows a specific urban fringe zone in Rome which was prominently featured in Italian Realist films. Anna Magnani’s Voice (from Mamma Roma by Pier Paolo Pasolini, 1962) guides us through this suburb – Fellini and Vittorio de Sica are never far away. This movie uses this once up and coming area to address the end of the modernist utopian ideals and with it the relationship between urban development and the landscape around it. The city limits become an artifact of the past.
