“As the war approached, Lye couldn’t get any advertising commissions. After being unemployed for a long time, his friends helped him and found him some grants from the British Council and from the Tourism and Industrial Development Agency. The result was a film based on a popular dance, the Lambeth Walk, that is characterised by hand movements and a scream “Oi!”. Ernst Meyer edited several versions of the music and Lye matched them according to a great variety of visual rhythms.” (Roger Horrocks)
