Colour Box is one of the first direct films that we know of. Lye painted directly on the film and quickly understood all the advantages to be had of this discovery and how this fit so well his search for an art of movement. Actually, he doesn’t seek a naturalistic reproduction of movement nor does he aim at reproducing and respecting the configuration of objects. He seeks movement. Lye painted arabesques on the film which gave the coloured compositions a trembling that recalled the passing of energy as he perceived it. -Yann BEAUVAIS
