The Band Tofu.gti presents a cover version from Milli Vanilli’s “Girl You Know It’s True”, a duet (Rob Pilatus, Frank Morvan) produced in Germany in the early 80’s, which only had the job to accompany the shows and [VID] Videos from music done by others at studios with virtuose dances and perfect Lip-Sync. The end of the band came within an american tour. During a show in July 1989 in Lake Compounce Theme Park in Bristol, Connecticut, the playback band from “Girl You Know It’s True” got stuck. The scandal was big. On 15 November 1990 their Producer, Frank Farian, announced that both Musicians never sang before and that they couldn’t sing at all. At Tofus cover version things work even less: by this moment, the dumb singers can’t even dance. They stand, whereas the other musicians are being recorded into various playback tracks, only motionless in the middle of the stage, just to let out the sound “uhhh” at the end of the music, combined with the singing of the birds and coyotes. There is the idea of inertia, of getting stuck and not to be able to speak. And even if you are able to articulate, what are you going to articulate? Predetermined texts, only going through the lips. Songs have always been imitated and prayers have always been reiterated, for the most part with a deplorable devout happiness. All this is being shown to us currently, in a music form, through all the Karaoke singers and cover versions in a very direct way. Sad and also a little bit dangerous, when you can’t say anything by yourself and on top of that the playback get stuck. But: “Yes, You Know It’s True. Uhhh, uhhh, uhhh...”.
