Set in the early1960s, this is a stylized account of girlhood – where perversion is innocent, family is strange and adulthood lonely. A Girl’s Own Story is the most ambitious and emotionally complex of Campion’s short films. Pam, a young adolescent, is caught in the middle of Beatlemania, sexual yearning, and a tense family life. Already, we can see how Jane Campion’s directorial vision will develop into the richly eccentric and disturbing worlds of Sweetie (1989), An Angel at My Table (1990), and The Piano (1993). This early short film anticipates a hugely successful and singular career of which a great portion has been devoted to exploring female subjectivity: with many of her films being constructed around female experience, female heroes, and female points of view. Jane Campion is one of the world's foremost directors. She won an Oscar for "The Piano" in 1993 and made history that same year when she became the first female director ever to win the Palme D'or at Cannes. Her other credits as a director include SWEETIE, AN ANGEL AT MY TABLE, Portrait of a Lady, Holy Smoke and In the Cut. She is currently filming BRIGHT STAR.
