Sometimes one looks out of a window and sees something disturbing and powerful. Sometimes there's a camera in one's hand. “Glueman” was a collaboration with the band, Fugazi, built around some troubling footage that I'd gathered from Brooklyn windows and some music the band was developing concurrently. Video and song were intertwined, a shared deconstruction. Our intention was to challenge the music video form on several fronts: creating a piece that foregrounded documentary footage rather than pop conventions, finding ways to meld images and music outside of the commercial stream dictated by MTV and the record industry. In short, thinking about the problem of when to avert one's eyes, while making a "music video" with nothing to sell. Jem Cohen
