Hal, Alex and Bill, are three characters from Kubrick’s films. When I saw the Masquerade Ball scene from “Eyes Wide Shut” in 1999, I thought of working on a piece that would combine Hal’s strange leadership, Alex’s excessive command and Bill’s instillation in the ceremonial rite. For the first two characters, what is mechanical and what is human in them serves the unchangeable fusion but also averts the identity conclusively. The situation that Bill faces during the late night ball in “Eyes Wide Shut” is extinguished in the standardization of the expression of the costume’s mask. “Masked Wall” unites and freezes the three figures, under the probe of a red light, in a mask that emits transformed sound fragments that make up part of the scenes associated with each of Kubrick’s characters.
