Little by little, through breathtaking images and cryptic words, Konstantina Kotzamani constructs a parable that functions as a warning about disease and fear. The result is a dystopia in the form of a moral fable, with some similarities to an earlier work by the Greek Director – “Washingtonia”, which was screened in Vila do Conde in 2014. At the beginning of the film, a character tells a story: one day the city of Athens awakens, swathed in a strange yellow haze, and people start becoming mysteriously ill. The inhabitants try to make sense of the situation and decide to quarantine the sick in their homes, planting a palm tree in front of each affected household. The inexplicable biblical plague puts the timeless city and its society at risk, clouded by the spectre of death. In a film that incorporates the unease and unrest of the previous “Washingtonia”, we see how the city is gradually enveloped in a blur as much lethargic as it is poetic. (JA)
