The grotesque and the comic come together in Joanna Rytel’s animated film to give an unusual, almost perverted vision of the pre-natal exploits of two pregnant women. Close to the date of giving birth, which is also near the saturation point of both as regards their circumstances, the two women fantasise together about leaving their children in the care of invisible parents and going on holiday. Meanwhile the children of each, still babies, play and imitate the behaviour of the adults. The Swedish director, of Polish origin imagines maternity as disillusion, defying stereotypes associated with motherhood and social expectations with regard to women. The principal merit of the film lies in its marginalised viewpoint and its handling of issues that are not usually considered, but here exposed in a sulphuric and irreverent manner. (JA)
