“NYC 1991” was created from Super8 films made in New York in 1991 (as can be surmised from the title), assembled recently to include “Dirty Windows” by Lee Ranaldo. The images have a recognizable Super8 patina that is of lesser quality yet renowned for making certain aesthetic results easier to achieve, in addition to the 25-year gap from the filming date. Like Lee Ranaldo, Paul Abreu has a personal vision of America, of the images that surprise him and that surprise us, above all as if the collective memory of the cinema operated in a pathos from which it could never release itself. But in the end, we may be constantly surprised by what we retain from the places we visit, even if they are only seen in films. Ranaldo’s dialogue with poetry and music presents us with a variety levels of perception, all expressed but not subdued, thus avoiding a merely illustrative exercise. Paulo Abreu is a close friend of the Curtas Film Festival who has featured in a variety of competitions, from music videos to experimental and then national competitions. He is a member of Bando-à-Parte, which recently had an exhibition at Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery, in which he also participated. (MM)
