The movie theatre, a black box perfectly devoid of light where the audience is comfortably seated to watch projected images, can also be used as a device for other types of cinematographic experimentation. Rainer Kohlberger uses it in his ceaseless search for his zero point, for the void or the absolute abstraction, or as the potential for relationships between physical and metaphysical experience or between the mechanisms of perception and the various states of consciousness. “Not even nothing can be free of ghosts” is the highly revealing title for his project, which take us to those instants, fractions of a second perhaps, in which our feelings become confused and cause us to see ghosts in the gaps between the images which, in fact, are the light shaped by perfectly geometric computer-generated surfaces. It is impossible to feel indifferent to this intense sound and light experience even if the very least you take away from it is a prophecy of the demise of cinema. Note, however, that the death of art has been presaged time and time again from the early 20th century avant-garde artists onwards, and has only helped art to be reborn. (MM)
