Using footage from the amateur filmmaker Harald von Vietinghoff Riesch in an unusual exercise in montage, Clemens Von Wedemeyer creates an intimate film – since it is also part of his family’s memories – with this highly original focus on the Second World War: horses. The horses of the German army, symbolising pride in racial purity; those requisitioned from the occupied territories, also selected from amongst the finest thoroughbreds; horses representing corpses, replacing the bodies of soldiers killed in combat which were not allowed to be filmed; horses pulling the carts carrying refugees fleeing the front line; horses dead from exhaustion as part of the vast war effort when over three million perished in Germany alone. The film is part of a larger arts project entitled P.O.V. (Point of View), in which the artist explores the subjective vision of the camera operator immediately behind the front line. The artist and director’s relationship with the Curtas Festival began in 2014 when his video installation “Silberhӧhe” featured in the Solar - Cinematic Art Gallery as part of the “Aventura Antonioni” exhibition.
