Can we talk about our life in terms of particular objects? Multifaceted (cinema, video, photography) visual artist Salla Tykkä – whose work has often been exhibited at the Curtas Festival and who was one of the In Focus authors in 2009 – presents, as the title indicates, a retrospective of a woman, taking the photographic material she has been gathering as its chronological reference. We hear her describing its characteristics, functionalities and other features in her own words and in her doubts about certain aspects we encounter one of the most interesting aspects of the film, namely forgetting and the fragility of memory (“was it really like this?”). It is not a biographical record in the conventional sense, since the voiceover narration says more about the material than the woman’s personal life, even though treasured possessions may sometimes reveal a great deal about us. And then, of course, there are the images, not only of the woman operating the equipment but, above all, what is being filmed, at different times and in different places (Patagonia and Terra do Fogo), which is almost always landscapes, poetic spaces that combine to construct another landscape, a “memorial” (this time in a biographical sense) just like the sometimes clear, sometimes blurred images (the problem of the reliability of memory once again) that we retain of places we pass through in life.
