The only senses that films objectively share with their audience as filmed reality are sight and hearing. Pulido goes one step further in his film – shown in the Generation section of the Berlinale this year. El Edén is sensorial and also sensual, giving the spectator access to the smells and tastes, and even the heat and humidity of a lost paradise – once a hotel – but now an abandoned space overrun by nature. It is visited by two equally wild, poor boys with nothing to do on a hot tropical afternoon. Naked from the waist up they grope their way around the abandoned building, which gives up its hidden secrets, from the delicious taste of fruit to other secrets which are darker. There is biblical resonance here, when the fruit is followed by a striking event. Besides realism there is mystery and magic. The film could in fact be included in the traditions of "magical realism”, so strongly rooted in Latin America. The film’s title is a clear indication. Gabriel García Márquez is in fact a compatriot of Pulido’s. This Eden/Paradise of natural discovery, silence, peace and life is juxtaposed with the Hell of violence and death (the symbol of the scorpion), and it is in the suggestion of how both these worlds are so close that Pulido - who films the actors almost always in close-up or near close-up - makes such a strong impression.
