In 1939, at the end of the Great Depression in the USA, Ivan Besse, a projectionist at the Strand Theatre in Britton (South Dakota), is struggling with the dilemma of the empty theatre. So he decides to hit the city streets with his camera to film people and then attract them to his theatre so that they can see themselves projected on the big screen, like big film stars. Eighty years later, two Spanish filmmakers travel to Britton to find out what is left of those shootings, those people and their memory of those times. Out of this trip comes a short and very simple documentary film, a few scattered images – that silence more than they reveal – but that rekindle in us that ancestral memory of time that slips by and of the laughter that stays forever fixed on the big screen. A small story about memory that slips by, about those who slip by. A story about the traces of their passage and about their absence, but also a story about the love a gaze returns to us. (VV)
