Anyone who visits the centre of the city of Münster in Germany for the first time will notice three bizarre iron cages hanging from the steeple of the Cathedral. They were originally used to display the corpses of John of Leiden, Bernhard Knipperdolling and Bernhard Krechting, three Anabaptist leaders from the city, after they had been publicly tortured and executed. The cages have remained in the same place for almost 500 years, as reminders of their reign. “Münster”, a film by Martin Le Chevalier – an author well known in Art circles for his critical perspectives on contemporary ideologies and myths – explores the history of the rise and fall of Anabaptism, a breakaway movement from Lutheranism which advocated a communist society in the middle of the 16th century, a completely unheard of political experiment and alternative model that challenged the established political, religious and economic powers. However, “Münster” is not a reconstruction of this period, but a self-reflexive work, both in terms of cinematographic form as representation and in the premisse, which reproduces possible responses to each issue, questioning and engaging with new ideas on the invention of myths, historical truth (ostensible and hidden), or the intoxicating nature of faith and power.
