The posters on the wall, the make-up products lying around and the messy clothes leave no doubt: we are in the bedroom of a teenager. Whereas talks about guys are normal, the use of drugs hints at the imminent clash between adolescence and the loss of innocence, which is what interests Antonio Campos in this story. When a computer screen reveals the protagonist has put her virginity online for sale, the film’s proposal becomes clear, just as the frivolity with which the girl deals with the matter, discussing with her friend how she will spend the money on shopping. That same irresponsibility, and consequent emotional detachment, will be tested when, as she meets the man who won the bidding in a hotel room, she is confronted with her plan. By showing the girl’s cynicism, Antonio Campos criticises this endless consumerism and extreme materialism. However, as the teenager and her loneliness are exposed, it is impossible not to feel empathy before so much fragility. The film begins fascinated by the egocentric, amoral behaviour of this character but, as it approaches her vulnerability, it finds something humane in her alienation. (JA)
