Lisbon, 1971. We travel back in time and arrive in Portugal during the time of the Salazar dictatorship in the early 1970s. We are in a middle-class bourgeois family. The husband works and the wife stays at home to take care of the house and their small child. However, something is not quite right: the wife is suspicious of her husband, who works even on Sundays, and this causes problems with their child. Boldly, the woman decides to follow her husband and discovers that he belongs to the PIDE, the secret police behind the repressive regime. The story serves as a cultural narrative on the dictatorship and its contradictions, especially the contrast between the violence of the state and the peace and safety enjoyed by this “protected” nuclear family. The period reconstruction is as noteworthy as the film is claustrophobic – the audience is constantly on guard. “Menina” (“Young Girl”) is a short film by the young Portuguese director Simão Cayatte, who returns to the Festival after presenting “Miami” in the competition in 2014.
