In “SFR”, Christian Keathley investigates some of his earliest film memories. It is not, however, a narcissistic exercise where the author demonstrates the precociousness of his film knowledge. On the contrary, Keathley tries to unravel some of the confusion that typically accompanies the childhood discovery of the world through cinema. Beginning with the pirate film “Swiss Family Robinson” (Ken Annakin, 1960), shown repeatedly until its replacement in 1972, Keathley tells us how, for several years, he confused some of the actors with other American public figures. The most far-fetched example was his confusing the American politician S.I. Hayakawa with Sessue Hayakawa, the silent-screen star of Japanese descent, who at the end of his career played the villain in “Swiss Family Robinson”. “SFR” recalls these memories with humour and nostalgia, almost seeming to lament the loss of a biographical period, probably familiar to many of us, when life and cinema insisted on mixing.
