The South Korean born American director behind the pseudonym ::kogonada is the author of dozens of audiovisual essays, many of which were commissioned by the known Canadian publisher of DVDs, Criterion. His supercuts - musical montages of scenes from the films of Wes Anderson, Stanley Kubrick, or Alfred Hitchcock are highly addictive audiovisual experiences that quickly went viral on the Internet. With more analytical intent, “What is neorealism?” was commissioned by the magazine “Sight & Sound” and edited by the British Film Institute as part of the cinema cycle “The roots of neo-realism”, which was held there in June 2013. The essay compares “Terminal Station” (1953), by the Italian director Vittorio De Sica, with a montage of American producer David O. Selznick’s, “Indiscretion of an American Wife”. Using the technique of ‘split-screen’ and changes in the film speed and direction ::kogonada identifies the main differences between the construction of the two versions in order to suggest some of the main features of formal Italian neorealism. A lesson on the importance of editing in cinema history (and in the audiovisual essay) in five minutes. (TB)
