The work of the duo Adrian Martin and Cristina Álvarez López has been highly influential in the field of the contemporary audiovisual essay. Both are career academics, Adrian Martin in fact being one of the most distinguished scholars of the moving image. To traditional research and written essays, they have added a new audiovisual component in the form of the audiovisual essay, exemplifying some of their ideas. Their work have arisen as much out of their academic work as out of commissions by film buff sites like Notebook by MUBI or Keyframe by Fandor, both of which stream cult films. In “Shapes of Rage” (commissioned by Notebook-MUBI), the authors compare “The Birds” (Alfred Hitchcock, 1963) with “The Brood” (David Cronenberg, 1979). The technique of these audiovisual essays lies in the juxtaposition of images, sometimes even using split screen-so that the similarities stand out. There is, therefore, no explanatory voiceover but only the diegetic sound of the film. In this case, emphasis is placed on how terror is constructed cinematically (through types of shot, movements and colours), but also how themes are established (especially, in this example, the issue of motherhood or infantile naivety). The authors show how Cronenberg has absorbed the lesson of Hitchcock, and in addition they raise two concerns for cinephiles, that of intertextuality between filmmakers, and that of essayists in relation to cinema history.
