In this fictional exercise on actual events, Marcel Dalio, an important supporting actor in French cinema, reflects, via voiceover, on the types of roles he was offered throughout his career, from the 1930s. In France, Dalio was always the “other” the one whose name was never spoken, but to whom was attributed all the defects: the Jew. He was cast as extortionist, snitch, pimp, mercenary, arms dealer, female trafficker, and Arab, but above all in the role of a coward and traitor, humiliated and abused by everyone and invariably marked down for certain death. The only time his character was clearly identified as a Jew was in two films by Jean Renoir in which he had a part: “La Grande Illusion” (1937) and “La Règle du jeu” (1939). During the German occupation he saw his name deleted from French film credits and he even featured in a Nazi propaganda poster as the “Jew-type”. He took refuge in Hollywood, where he played another sort of character, much nicer but also formulaic: "the Frenchman". A model essay of encyclopaedic cinephilia and impeccable montage sense from Rappaport, mixing humour and a relentless mordacity in equal doses. (TB)
