In his most recent film, Chinese filmmaker Hu Wei presents us with a delicate, and visually stimulating composition. Hu Wei shows us a fragment of a relationship: the cordial meeting between two families – one of French origin, the other Chinese – portrayed from the moment preparations for the farewell of the latter begin. The two families share a common member: Camille (Camille Debray), the biological daughter of the Asian couple. Latent discomfort and awkwardness are feelings that the cordiality of the meeting fails to camouflage. When we think the emotional paroxysm of the reunion has already taken place, we are surprised by the reaction of Shen Dai (Nai An) who, in a moving monologue, deconstructs, in front of us, the very concept of "speaking silence". The film, which stars the always amazing Isabelle Huppert, witnesses in Nai An’s performance a moment of unbreakable strength. Hu Wei has already been at Vila do Conde with the short film "La Lampe Au Beurre de Yak" (winner of the Clermont-Ferrand Grand Prix and nominated for an Oscar). The filmmaker has presented "Ce Qui Nous Éloigne" at festivals like Venice and Sundance. (TL)
