Happiness is not joyful. Finally, how is that time writes itself in films? Overwhelmed by the puerile illusions of live television we stopped asking this question. When filming the "origin" of the 21st century (a commission work for the 60th edition of the Cannes Film Festival), Jean-Luc Godard offers us 16 minutes of pure film editing apotheosis, telling and showing us how these tragic times we live in were born from the utopias and nightmares of the 20th century. It’s no coincidence that the editing overlaps memories from the two great wars with images of films, in a whirlwind in which fragments of Roberto Rossellini or Jerry Lewis, Jean Renoir or Godard himself bring back to us the pain of imagined happiness. Why? Because, like we are told by Jean Servais, whose voice is extracted from the final scene of "Le Plaisir" (1950), by Max Ophuls, "happiness is not joyful". And those words by Maupassant are the ones that in the end allow us to come to terms with the obstinacy of our dreams. (João Lopes)
