The journey from Dakar, Senegal’s present-day capital, to Saint-Louis, the first city capital of that African country up to 1902, is 256 km long and is undertaken by seven passengers, for different reasons, in professional taxi driver Mr. Sall’s old station wagon. It’s in their company that the French-Senegalese Dyana Gaye invites us to spend the 50-minutes length of "Un Transport en Commun", a great example of the potential freedom enabled by the short format. First because of the awareness that it lasts as long as it needs to tell the story, without stretching it unnecessarily or leaving anything unsaid. Second because of the chosen form: a modern musical in which the songs are not mere breaks but rather contribute, comment or move the action further. Finally, for its candor, its energy, the desire for cinema that emerges "Un Transport en Commun": made with actors without real experience in acting, singing or dancing, it’s a film that uses "amateurism" to its advantage and takes it back to its original meaning: someone making something "out of love".
