Oh Dear", a commission by the Rotterdam Film Festival, is an exuberant miniature of Nicholas Provost’s cinema (who tried to be in this film "a little less abstract than usual", despite that deer…) or maybe we might rather say: an exuberant miniature of cinema in general, in all its iconographic power and a narrative condensed in less than one minute. The film – which was awarded the prize for best experimental short film in 2004 by the jury of Curtas Vila do Conde – was on competition with another work by the same author, "Exoticare" that the jury ended up rewarding in the fiction category. To this day, it’s as if I was part of that jury: I always think about that film when I think about Curtas Vila do Conde and I couldn’t make up my mind between the two for this 25th anniversary Best Of list.
