L’Etoile de Mer" is a good example of cinema’s potential at the age of silent films. Contrary to narrative logic, Man Ray creates a story guided by words and images where perception is distorted and driven by a dreamlike logic. Sexual suggestions, bewilderment, voyeurism, association of ideas, games of words, freedom of interpretation… all of them resources that seem to concern Ray through the feverish unreel of this short film. Man Ray’s cinematic practice brings together different types of representation dissociating the surrealistic storytelling of phenomenological reality by resorting to in camera photography techniques, time and space disruption and obvious blows to the dictatorship of plausibility. In that same year, another surrealist film marked the history of avant-garde cinema: "Le Chien Andalou". Ladies and gentlemen, there was a time when cinema had more freedom than now! (Rui Poças)
