The film shows us a group of fishermen from a village in the Northeast of Brazil that make use of a very peculiar technique when hunting their prey: men of different age groups cradle the captured fishes in their arms, caressing them and kissing their gills, pressing them firmly against their naked chests while they wait for their ultimate death (the absolute climax). It’s a repetitive sequence of cruelty, tenderness and death barely interrupted by the beauty of the images, colors and sounds of nature, by the eroticism of the male bodies and the close-ups of their faces (that at times directly address the viewer). "The Fish" by Jonathas de Andrade remains within the hybrid territory between documentary and fiction – the fishermen are real but the ritual arises from the artist’s imagination – and intends to be a veiled take on conventional ethnographic documentaries and the way this object has been shaped by Western (white, European) gaze that leans towards objectifying and eroticizing the natives’ bodies.
