Matthew Rankin, winner of the Best animation award at Curtas, in 2015, with "Mynarski Death Plummet", returns to Vila do Conde with this film about a brilliant visionary, mechanical engineer, futurist, physicist, pigeon-fancier, who is best known for his revolutionary work in the field of electromagnetism and who set the roots of modern alternating current electric power, Nikola Tesla. The film is a documentary-animation-visual poem entirely created by light, that is based on the sound recording obtained through a strange device named Tesla Spirit Radio, built from scratch by the film’s sound director, Sacha Ratcliffe, that aims at translating light variations and vibrations through sound textures. The choice of black and white (light and shadow) completes a visual composition strongly inspired by the iconography of Avant-garde, decomposing the illusion of space, considered as part of the photographic film base (in conjunction with the inclusion of abstract shapes), thus emphasizing the rhythm and the kinetic game of contrasts and scale.
